ACT modernized a 25-ton portal crane with structural, mechanical, and control upgrades for the U.S. Navy’s Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, GA.
Navy 25-ton portal crane modernization.
Advanced Crane Technologies, serving as the prime contractor, modernized a 1980s-era Westmont 25-ton portal crane at the U.S. Navy’s Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, GA. The project encompassed a complete upgrade of the crane’s mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. Key improvements included new operator controls and seating, integrated load cells, LED lighting, and a Tier 4 EPA-compliant diesel generator. ACT also replaced slew bearings, redesigned the counterweight, and installed new limit switches to enhance operational reliability and safety.
The travel system underwent full disassembly and refurbishment, including overhauls of end trucks, equalizers, and gudgeon pins, with replacement of seals, bearings, brakes, motors, and reducers. All wire rope was replaced, and sheaves were cleaned, rebuilt, and fitted with new seals and bearings. ACT provided a turnkey solution—covering site survey, engineering and design, fabrication, removal, off-site assembly, installation, full Navy acceptance testing, and operator/maintenance training—ensuring the crane meets modern Navy operational standards.
